Since your adjusted gross income was $54,000 or less in 2007, you can use Free File to prepare and e-file your taxes online.http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html

If you have any allowable expenses for the $7404 income on the 1099, you’d subtract them before calculating your tax. Unless you have over $7000 of eligible expenses, you will end up owing something, probably around 15% of the net.Either buy a version of TurboTax that allows 1099’s, or find someone to help you – if you have no idea what you’re doing, trying to do it online doesn’t sound wise. If you can find a VITA or TCE/TaxAide site in your area (see irs.gov for info) they’ll do your return at no charge.

When you entered the information in on Turbo tax you created an electronic W2 and you electronically signed your tax return. Unless you owe additional tax, you have nothing to mail in.

I would recommend TaxCut by H&R Block. It’s an online prep program that “interviews” you about your situation, automatically selects and completes the forms appropriate to your situation. Some versions (like the premium version) even include a free federal e-File. I switched from the more expensive TurboTax several years ago, and I love it.

Dear Juls: Prior year returns can not be efiled. They must be mailed, only current year’s returns can be efiled. Free efile is given by IRS.gov, and several tax software companies. Try Taxcut, Turbo Tax etc. This advice was prepared based on our understanding of the tax law in effect at the time it was written as it applies to the facts that you provided.
